Our Mission
Alaska Power Association is dedicated to assisting our members in accomplishing their goals of delivering electric energy and other services at the best value to their customers.
Overview
Alaska Power Association is the statewide trade association that represents the electric utilities that supply power to more than a half-million Alaskans from Utqiagvik to Unalaska, through the Interior and Southcentral, and down the Inside Passage.
APA advocates on behalf of the electric utilities in Alaska that serve some of the remotest locations under some of the harshest climatic conditions on Earth. We are leading the way by exploring the benefits of emerging technologies and supporting our electric utility members in their missions of providing safe, reliable, and affordable power. Our innovative spirit is essential to meet the challenges of Alaska’s conditions.
History
1952
Electric cooperatives in Alaska joined together to form the Alaska Rural Electric Cooperative Association (ARECA) in 1952. Through the association’s advocacy and by sharing their resources, cooperatives pioneered electric service to many Alaska communities. Today, more than 90% of Alaskans receive their electricity from electric cooperatives or municipal utilities.
1979
In 1979, ARECA hired its first staff—an executive director—and began providing services that assist utility members with their goals of providing reliable service at the lowest reasonable cost. The trade association’s advocacy has focused on keeping electric rates affordable for consumers and strengthening Alaska’s energy systems.
2003
In 2003, ARECA changed its name to Alaska Power Association (APA) and has continued to advocate on behalf of the interests of its member utilities on current issues.
Governance
The organization is governed by a board of directors with representatives from each of the member electric cooperatives, joint action agencies, and municipal member utilities.
Staff provides governmental representation, industry information, insurance, training, and other services to member utilities and to APA’s sister organizations: ARECA Insurance Exchange (AIE) and ARECA Educational Foundation (AEF).
