Newsletters

APA & AIE Safety Newsletters are utility based and circulated monthly via email for members to promote safety in the workplace. We encourage members to distribute the newsletters to your staff or print them out and hang them in common areas around the office.

Good Catches & Learning Opportunities

Good Catches & Learning Opportunities provide detailed information about potentially dangerous events that happen at utilities. It’s important for us to learn from these and not to assign blame. If we can start conversations that raise awareness and improve safety across the organization, we can save lives.

This online form is designed to protect anonymity. You are encouraged to report openly, knowing that your name will not be shared. You can also submit past incidents that you believe could help others stay safe. Even older events can serve as powerful learning tools for our team members.

Video On Demand Training Materials

The Safety Source VOD library is offered to members free of charge and has more than 700 videos to choose from. The system is geared toward safety meetings and the remote workforce where training sessions are difficult to manage. Each session does have a quiz that you can use to confirm participation and document the training.

Online CPR, AED, and First Aid Training

This is an inexpensive training option for utility employees whose schedules don’t correspond with regular training times. Employees will view training sessions through the Health and Safety Institute (HIS) and test their knowledge through online testing. When finished with the online portion, your employee will be able to finish the course through an online 90-minute face-to-face session with APA. Employees who are new to this training or who have not had it in many years can complete it in less than 3 hours. It may take longer if the training is spread. Employees are encouraged to take notes during training and are encouraged to ask questions during the face-to-face session. Utilities are encouraged to purchase their own CPR manikin to streamline the training process.

Electrical Safety Demonstration Trailer

The Electrical Safety Demonstration Trailer was made possible by contributions of the electric utilities and companies listed below. This Safety Trailer is meant to save lives by educating the community on electric utility hazards, safety, and how the electric system works.
Thank you to the sponsors of this trailer for contributing time, money, and materials, and for your reliable commitment to safety.

Lineman Safety Week

In the vast and challenging terrains of Alaska, where extreme weather conditions, rugged landscapes, and remote communities define the daily realities, the role of Alaska lineman becomes both critical and perilous. Recognizing these inherent risks and the paramount importance of safety, Alaska Power Association created Lineman Safety Week. This event serves as a platform for lineworkers to share experiences, learn from industry leaders, and return to their respective utilities with enhanced safety awareness and skills.

The four-day training session is geared for Alaskan linemen, but other electric utility personnel who work with or manage linemen are welcome to attend as well. Join your peers from around the state to learn from noted experts in the field while having a good time! This initiative reflects the collective effort to ensure that Alaska’s lineworkers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely, ultimately safeguarding themselves and the communities they serve.

Past Training Focus Areas

  • Advanced Aerial Rescue Techniques: Equipping lineworkers with the skills to perform high-angle rescues safely and efficiently.
  • Tree-Clearing and Vegetation Management: Addressing the complexities of maintaining clear power lines amidst Alaska’s dense forests.
  • EPZ Grounding and Bonding Practices: Ensuring safety through proper electrical grounding techniques.
  • Equipment Handling: Safe operation of bucket trucks, derrick diggers, and other essential tools.

  • Test Instruments and Troubleshooting: How to use test instruments at their full potential to help troubleshoot electrical issues.
  • SQUARE UP: Tailboarding, cultural leadership & brain health.
  • CCO Rigging: Lineman specific.

Utility Safety Summit

Each year, Alaska’s electric utility professionals gather for an event that goes beyond policies and procedures—an event where safety becomes a shared mission. The APA & AIE Utility Safety Summit, scheduled for March 25–25, 2026, in Anchorage, Alaska, brings together linemen, engineers, safety officers, and utility leaders to reinforce a culture where every employee returns home safely.
Hosted by the Alaska Power Association (APA) and the ARECA Insurance Exchange (AIE), the summit is a cornerstone event for those committed to improving safety performance in a challenging and often unpredictable working environment. As Alaska’s utilities operate in some of the harshest conditions in the country, fostering a strong safety culture is not just ideal—it’s essential.

Over the course of 2 days, the summit will feature expert-led presentations, interactive workshops, and hands-on training sessions focused on topics such as incident prevention, safety innovation, regulatory compliance, and the growing importance of mental health in the workplace. From frontline workers to executive decision-makers, all participants will engage in meaningful discussions and practical exercises that address real-world safety challenges.

Speakers with deep expertise in utility safety will share stories, lessons learned from critical incidents, and innovative tools designed to minimize risk and improve on-the-job decision-making. Beyond the sessions, the summit offers a valuable networking opportunity, allowing professionals from across the state to share insights and build connections. An exhibit hall will showcase the latest in safety technology and protective equipment, helping utilities stay ahead of industry trends.

Whether you’re a safety veteran or new to the field, the APA & AIE Utility Safety Summit is an invaluable experience. It’s not just about compliance—it’s about culture, leadership, and a deep commitment to protecting the people who power Alaska.

Sound Survey

During a loss control and safety visit we can do a sound survey and label areas with dangerous levels of noise. Not only is this helpful to keep employees from damaging their hearing, it’s an AKOSH requirement to do a sound survey and label these areas.

Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program

The National Electric Cooperative Association’s RESAP program is administered by APA. It’s a national safety initiative designed to help electric cooperatives strengthen their safety culture and performance. RESAP provides a structured framework that promotes continuous improvement in safety practices through leadership engagement, peer evaluations, and open communication. The program emphasizes that a strong safety culture begins with committed leadership and is sustained through active participation at all levels of an organization. By fostering collaboration and accountability, RESAP helps cooperatives identify risks, implement effective controls, and ultimately protect the well-being of their employees and communities.

Continuous Safety Improvement Award

The APA Commitment to Continuous Safety Improvement Award invites APA members to recognize individuals, teams, departments, shifts, supervisors, or entire organizations that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to enhancing safety culture and practices. This award honors those who have dedicated time and resources to protecting both employees and the public through meaningful safety initiatives.
Open to all APA members, nominations are strongest when supported by detailed documentation and visual evidence such as photos. Each year, the APA Safety Committee carefully reviews all submissions and selects the recipient who best exemplifies continuous improvement in workplace safety.
